Hiking the Appalachian Trail: Running Down a Dream in West Virginia (2026)

In the world of long-distance hiking, the Appalachian Trail is a legendary challenge, and one of its most notorious sections is the 'Roller Coaster' in Virginia. This is where I found myself on Mother's Day, embarking on a grueling journey that would test my limits and leave an indelible mark on my hiking experience.

The Roller Coaster: A Mother's Day Adventure

I began my day at the Jim & Molly Denton shelter, a beautiful spot in Virginia that most hikers bypass. But not me; I wanted to spend Mother's Day in a special place, and so I did, alone. Little did I know that this decision would set the tone for an extraordinary adventure.

When I learned that my daughter was planning a surprise visit in Harper's Ferry, I was determined to get there ahead of her. So, I decided to hike 28 miles instead of the planned 18, a crazy idea that only a mother's love could inspire.

The Roller Coaster Lives Up to Its Name

The Roller Coaster, a 14-mile stretch of steep and rocky terrain, lived up to its reputation. I counted eight challenging ascents, each requiring a significant effort. Despite my previous marathon experience, this section proved to be a formidable opponent.

As I hiked, I hit the 1000-mile marker, a significant milestone that boosted my morale. I took a moment to reflect and express gratitude for my own mother, but the journey had to continue.

The conditions were tough, with muggy weather and poorly marked trails. I even got turned around a few times, adding to the challenge. But the scariest part was a dangerous road crossing, a detail often overlooked in discussions about this section.

Hitting the Wall and Finding Strength

Three miles from the hostel, I hit the wall, a familiar feeling for marathon runners. It's a scary sensation, especially when you're alone in the woods and it's raining. I had to sit, eat my dinner, and gather the energy to continue. Thankfully, I made it to the hostel, where a fellow hiker named Groot came to my rescue, opening the door and offering much-needed ice cream.

A Well-Deserved Rest and a New Perspective

The next morning, refreshed after a hot shower and a warm bed, I woke up ready to tackle the remaining miles. I had missed the beautiful views from Bear's Den Rocks the night before, but as I left, I took a moment to appreciate the spectacle. It was a reminder that sometimes, we need to slow down to truly appreciate the beauty around us.

Crossing into West Virginia: A Breath of Fresh Air

After the Roller Coaster, crossing into West Virginia felt like a breath of fresh air. The 4-mile stretch along the border was a welcome relief, especially after the grueling previous day.

When I arrived in Harper's Ferry, the warmth and kindness of the volunteers and staff at the ATC Conservancy were overwhelming. I felt like royalty, and their hospitality made the journey even more memorable.

A Surprise Reunion and a Well-Earned Break

That evening, my daughter arrived, and I surprised her in the parking lot. Thanks to my determination over the past two days, I was able to take a much-needed break and spend quality time with her. We explored the area, and I introduced her to the wonderful people who had made me feel so welcome.

A Border Ballad of Gratitude

West Virginia, with its short but sweet stretch of the AT, represented a new beginning. It was a place where I could run towards my dreams again, fueled by the love of my family and the joy of hiking. It's a feeling that only a hiker can truly understand.

In the words of Tom Petty, "I felt so good, like anything was possible." That's the spirit of adventure, and it's what keeps us running down our dreams.
